Big Sunday happily welcomes you to Our Really Big Community Calendar.
We try to include all kinds of volunteering and helping opportunities for all kinds of interests, talents, passions, and ages! As you’ll see, these include volunteering opportunities (one-time and long-term) as well as the chance to support a nonprofit by attending fundraising events. Plus, of course, we include all of Big Sunday’s homegrown events, too! Whoever you are, and whatever you do, there is someone out there who could use your help.

Join Get Lit at the largest youth classic poetry festival in the world! Judges include Neil Hilborn, Duckwrth, Demi Adejuyigbe, & more! A few happy, helpful volunteers are needed to pitch in with the 2017 Classic Slam and ensure its runs smoothly. Interested? Head over to the Downtown Burbank Arts Festival to experience more than 200 original fine artists and world famous animators, whose work is found among the highest grossing animated films of all time. Free and open to the public, the festival is a great opportunity to experience the creative process, mingle with artists, and browse more than 400 shops and restaurants in Downtown Burbank.
The Creative Talent Network (CTN) will present the CTN Road Trip, with top storytellers, illustrators, character designers, and storyboard artists from the international animation community. Offering a rare opportunity to purchase artwork and interact with top animation artists, CTN will also host Sketch FEVER, where participants can sketch costumed models. Create Now is hosting an arts festival on Saturday, May 13th from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at Venice Hope Park, located across the street from Create Now’s facility near STAPLES. Dozens of kids will perform in a Talent Show and earn prizes.
There will be a DJ, fun arts and crafts activities, face painting, balloon twisters, popular children's characters and giveaways for the disadvantaged families in the local neighborhood.
Come cheer on young performers, and then attend Create Now’s After-Party from 12:00-2:00 pm at their center where you can meet some of the youth and learn more about Create Now. River LA is collaborating with communities and local stakeholders to reclaim street ends along the LA River for public use. And this summer, they have tons of events lined up to activate these spaces. On May 27th, join Broccoli City and River LA for a celebration of diversity and nature along the LA River. DJ + food + loads of fun await you along the river.
Volunteers will help set-up and decorate, escort seniors, help manage lines, serve dinner, act as wait staff, hand out thank you gifts, etc. Volunteers will need to be able to be on their feet and enjoying interacting with others. Around 200 attendees are expected at this event and they'll really need some help to pull off this event! Participants must be high school age or above, please! Westside Children’s Center (WCC) exists to give at-risk children and children living in poverty the foundation they need to increase their life choices and lead fulfilling lives. For over 25 years, WCC has been providing thousands of at-risk children and their families with critical, high-quality early education programs (including comprehensive Early Head Start services), family strengthening interventions, foster care and adoption services, and a range of vital, integrated services, including educational assessments, disabilities screenings, nutrition, dental and vision screenings, and pediatric health consultations.
Clear your calendar – It's going down!
We’re on a mission to bring STEAM to communities nationwide with the STEAM Carnival (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math). The goal of the event is to inspire more creative thinkers, and doers, through playful, meaningful, immersive experiences. STEAM Carnival champions the mindset that these multiple disciplines are seamlessly integrated into how people live, work, and play today.
The Hawthorne STEAM Carnival kicks off on May 19th, and you're invited to take part in the festivities. Come one, come all, bring a guest, and hang loose. This is going to be epic!
